Rutland is the smallest of the traditional English counties, and has the second smallest population of any local authority district in the country (only the City of London has fewer residents). There are only two towns in the county, Oakham, the county town, and Uppingham
A third of the adult working population work in the public sector i.e. public administration, health and education and the armed forces. It is statistically one of the least deprived areas in the country.
As of the 2001 census there were 4080 people aged over 70 living in Rutland, approximately 11.8% of the total population. Within the region there are 12 residential care and nursing care homes providing services for older people and people with learning disabilities.
