Cambridgeshire is the 15th largest county in England by area and the 29th largest by population. The modern county contains the former counties of Huntingdonshire and the Isle of Ely.
Geographically it is considered to be a very flat and low lying county, the highest point being a mere 480ft above sea level and the lowest point, Holme Fen, 9ft below sea level.
The county contains the area known as Silicon Fen, a collection of high-tech businesses situated, in the main, around the city of Cambridge, with many of the businesses having links to the university. The university itself is the fourth-oldest in existence and is considered one the best in the world.
As of the 2001 census there were 38764 people aged over 70 living in Cambridgeshire, approximately 7% of the total population. Within the county there are 173 residential care and nursing care homes providing services for older people and people with learning disabilities.
